Who should apply?

Writers in all creative genres are invited to apply.
All emerging and established writers with a proven publication record who are seeking a period of dedicated time to work on a project in any genre are welcome.
The Writers' Retreat 2024 accepts Authors who write in Arabic only.

The Writers' Retreat is specifically designed to empower passionate emerging Emirati writers, whisking them away from distractions and immersing them completely in their craft.

Program Details

  • What does the program offer?
    Share ideas, exchange inspiration, and embrace the power of collective creativity!

    This one week program offers more than just skill-building. It provides a platform for you to connect, collaborate, and build lasting relationships with a vibrant community of fellow writers.

    The week will focus on mentorship and consultations with established authors while allowing some time for self-directed work on manuscripts and peer community interaction. The program provides:

    • The expertise of professional guests
    • Q&A sessions
    • One-on-one consultations with mentors
    • Public readings
    • Group sessions led by guest mentors will explore techniques, aspects, and devices that writers may find useful in their practice.

  • The one week Writers' Retreat will provide writers space for the creative exploration of their writing practice and allow for mentored and self-directed time to work away from the constraints of everyday life.

  • The Writers' Retreat is a 7-day, in-person program designed for aspiring Emirati Writers below 35 years of age. It provides a distraction-free environment, where participants can immerse themselves in their craft. The program includes workshops, masterclasses, and seminars led by esteemed authors and literary experts.

  • The program is open to aspiring Emirati writers below 35 years of age who are passionate about developing their writing skills. Both experienced and novice writers are encouraged to apply.

  • Participants will develop comprehensive writing skills, receive personalized feedback and guidance from industry professionals, and have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with a community of fellow writers.

  • The program covers hotel accommodation, all scheduled workshops, masterclasses, and seminars, as well as meals and networking opportunities.

  • Applicants can submit their applications through our online portal. The application should include a writing sample, a CV, and any other required documents listed on the website.

  • No, the chosen participants will be fully sponsored by the Ministry of Culture.

  • Applications are thoroughly reviewed by a committee of literary professionals. Selection is based on the quality of the writing sample, the applicant's commitment to writing, and their potential for growth.

  • Yes, direct nominations from literary professionals or educators are encouraged. Nominees will still need to submit through the application process.

  • The application form will close on 12am 21st July, 2024. We recommend applying early as spaces are limited.

  • This program is specifically designed for Emirati writers. However, if you're an international writer interested in similar programs, please contact us for information on other opportunities.

  • Participants should bring writing materials (laptop, notebooks, pens), personal items for a week's stay, and an open mind ready for creative exploration.

  • While the schedule is intensive, there will be designated free periods for personal writing, relaxation, and informal networking with other participants.

  • Yes, university students who are accepted into the program will be provided with an excuse letter to justify their absence from classes during the 7-day retreat. This letter can be submitted to their educational institutions.
